SWANS - 10/05/10 Live in Chicago

Went to Ohio to see Swans a few days ago. Not only was the show absolutely worth it, I must say it was probably the best show I have seen in quite some time. Once again the best show I see all year is a reunion show. My generation is eclipsed by a group of men older than my dad. Good job guys. Anyway. Heres a link to a recording of the Chicago show. Set was pretty much the same, except in Ohio they blew out the bass amp during "I Crawled" if I recall correctly.

White Mice is a NOISE ROCK band from HELL. I saw Thrones open for them one time and I think Joe's beard went a little grayer. BLOW STUFF UP.

GRABBA GRABBA TAPE is (was? I dunno)a terrific bastardious duo that sings in Espanol and dresses up like Jim Henson's acid flashbacks. Think a speedier Kraftwerk playing nursery music with broken synth sounds and live drums.

Jeromes Dream - completed Disc 1

Okay, okay. Read the whole thing before you send me fiery flaming hate mail. Jeromes dream was a screamo band from 1997 to 2001. Still with me? Okay. I dare you to find any sort of resemblance between this band and the whiny makeup wearing crabcore you see haunting malls and skate parks nationwide. mathy, complex passages give way to cool "about as clean a sound you can get from a cranked amp" passages. The singer eschewed a mike in favor of just fucking yelling at the top of his lungs at shows for god's sake. Yes, its "emotional" music. But I'd put it in the same camp as Harvey Milk. Shit that just makes me scratch my head until it finally hits me. It's really, really good. Raw emotion that cannot be placed in any one category. Transcendent.

Featuring Dominick Fernow (aka prurient) on guitar, little is known about this black metal side project besides their undeniable awesomeness. The first track in particular is just amazing. Ripped from a 7 incher so its a bit grainy.

Polvo is a band I have only recently discovered, being brought to my attention by the very knowledgeable and talented Marcello. Think angular, open tuned guitar 90's rock in the vein of sonic youth, without all that "were so goddamn hip and cool, fuck yes look at us" shtick that is becoming quite tiresome. Yeah I said it. At least Polvo was smart enough to call it quits after the first couple albums.

P.S. saw the mighty JESUS LIZARD last week. Man oh man, they know how to put the shame on every band I've ever seen. Lightning Bolt twice was ALMOST as great. Yow is a crazy drunken fuck. Here's some vids from the Capitol Hill block party.Big thanks to Seattle's The Stranger for making me stand through 8 hours of faux-folk jangly jackoffs and doofusy beer and irony soaked frat rock. And the chick from the distillers, WTF? Every other band on the lineup can go fuck right off. Especially Black Lips.






How hard is it for people my age to "bring it"? 98 percent of the bands I like have members all over 30. The only exception I can think of off the top of my head is Xirin Arms.
